The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, has said it is not the mandate of the Amnesty Office to play the statutory role of security agencies in the oil rich Niger Delta.
Kuku made the comment in Abuja on Thursday while addressing a press conference on the bid by the House of Representatives to probe the Amnesty Office because of the recent attack on the facility of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company in the creeks of Bayelsa State.
He said the Amnesty Office, could only collaborate with the security agencies in the area of peace maintenance in the region.
He added that the Amnesty Office could only volunteer relevant information to security agencies in search of those whose activities were considered inimical to the prevailing peace in the area.
He said the effective relationship between the Amnesty Office and the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta was mostly responsible for the release of the names of suspected culprits responsible for the reported attack on the Agip manifold within 48 hours of the incident.
He stressed that he had implicit confidence in the ability of the operatives of the JTF to maintain peace and prevent crime in the area.
Kuku, said the mandate given to the Amnesty Office was misunderstood by the House of Representatives.
He said while he was not opposed to being investigated since he had nothing to hide and would not query the position of the House of Representatives, it was clear that the Amnesty Office was only saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the disarmament, rehabilitation and reintegration of 26,358 ex-militants undergoing the amnesty programme.
He said, “I am aware of the unfortunate attack on Agip facilities in Bayelsa State and the threat by these persons who claim to be operatives of MEND to carry onto further attacks the facilities of a number of multinational companies operating in the Niger Delta.”
