Fabio Capello has blamed a “misunderstanding” for his decision to resign as England manager on Wednesday and said he will not return to Italy.
Capello informed the Football Association of his decision to quit his post following a disagreement over the governing body’s decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.
The Italian was unhappy the FA had taken the decision despite the fact that Terry had yet to appear in court over charges of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, and went on Italian television to express his disappointment in a move that angered his employers.
“I didn’t run away, I left because there was a misunderstanding,” he told Striscia la Notizia. “I felt great but sometimes you decide to leave.”
Capello has been linked with a possible move to Internazionale but the former Milan, Juventus and Roma coach, who was expected to retire following Euro 2012, says he has no interest in returning to Serie A.
“In Italy, no. Absolutely not. Now I want to relax,” he added
Capello was also asked what the Queen had made of his departure, and responded: “The Queen is above it all.”
