As part of its efforts at ensuring safety on Nigeria roads, especially during the ‘ember’ months, Total Nigeria plc has taken its road safety campaign to members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), in Warri, Delta State. Speaking at the occasion, Francois Boussagol, managing director, Total Nigeria, represented by Simeon Ifere, distribution manager, stressed the need for tanker drivers to be safety conscious while conveying petroleum products from one destination to another. While stating that the firm was passionate about fostering basic safety practices in transportation, Ifere noted that the objective of the organisation was to achieve zero fatality and reduce accidents on our roads. According to the distribution manager, among several efforts of the organisation geared towards ensuring safety on our roads, is the establishment of a world-class ultra-modern driving school and truck inspection centre in Ibadan, south-west, Nigeria, designed for training tanker drivers vis-à-vis modules on defensive driving techniques, product knowledge and characteristics, fire prevention and anti-pollution, etc.

He therefore reiterated the need for all tanker drivers to attend the training school. The high point of the event was the unveiling of road safety campaign posters to tackle several accident issues, with the themes including: “Smoking is prohibited,” “Night driving is dangerous,” “Alcohol and driving is dangerous,” “Don’t drive under fatigue,” “Over speeding kills,” “Don’t exceed recommended speed limit,” “Don’t drive when under strong medicine,” and “No to product theft on the road.”

At the occasion was the Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps Warri, represented by the assistant corps commander, who commended Total Nigeria for its effort towards ensuring safe driving on Nigerian roads. He said the yearly campaign by the company would help a lot in reminding tanker drivers and other road users things they need to do and those they need to avoid in order to make our roads safe.

He pointed out three basic areas that need attention to avoid road accidents - the condition of the vehicle, the environment (road condition) and drivers’ adherence to driving rules as emphasised by Total Nigeria. The divisional police officer, Ekpan Division Warri, who was represented at the occasion by DSP Ayuba Ayuba, in his speech, commended the firm for the good gesture, while reminding the drivers and other road users to be security conscious while on the road.
