“Flattery corrupts both the receiver and the giver; and adulation is not of more service to the people than to kings” - ---Edmund Burke

It has always been an important duty of society to give recognition to its members for noteworthy achievements geared towards the upliftment of that society. The necessity of this action is premised upon the age-long moral duty to reward good and punish evil, which serves to maintain order and discipline within that society. It creates a working model for citizens and helps redefine their role in that society; but more importantly it is an indicant of how other societies would view it. So it becomes very important to confer only deserving citizens with honors and bestow titles upon only worthy achievers whose impact upon the development of that society is unquestionable.

When names like George Washington, Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein are mentioned as contributors to American history, the question marks do not arise for their impact not only pervaded around the country but well into other continents. Their feats are not shrouded in nepotistic veils or individual self-aggrandisement but were borne out of an altruistic will to better society and improve upon the lives of members of that society. This has fostered within the American society an attitude of invention, political-ingenuity, courage etc. as these were the attributes required to achieve national honors and recognition. The quality of the awardees highlights the significance of the honors and inspires people to great achievements just to have their names listed in the history books of that society.

However, when individuals with debatable characters and out rightly scandalous attributes are conferred with the highest form of recognitions available in a society, it destroys the moral fabric of that society and heavily burdens integrity, patriotism and courage. When evil is rewarded and good punished in societies, anarchy and uprisings are often the unsavory after-effects. This is the case with Nigeria; and when one takes a cursory look at the ills bedeviling this ‘potentially-wealthy’ African state, you would realise that remunerating evil and ignoring or totally neglecting good has been at the root of our problems.

From the federal civil service to the legislature, from the police to the judiciary, the ills of wrong-remuneration are all evident. The patriotic ones never rise up the ranks, but the mischievous, devious and compromising workers are faster off the mark and end up at the top in no time. This has spurred a spirit of nonchalance amongst entrants, as they become aware, albeit wrongfully, that to escape the poverty cycle in Nigeria you must embrace corruption.

The hard-hearted ones, who still believe in the Nigeria dream of fairness, equity and truth, and imbibe this in their daily endeavours are kicked out, constantly humiliated or left stagnant. There is a constant reiteration of the oblivion of honesty within the Nigerian State. We have set aside the honor due to the true heroes and accorded them to unworthy and less-deserving demagogues.

The true heroes of this year are the corps members who lost their lives defending the democracy being mismanaged now, and the only respect we paid them was placing a paltry price for their sacrifice.

The young-man who was killed along the East-West road for standing up against the institutional corruption of the police, as well as other victims of police exuberance/brutality, deserved to be honoured.

We have a class of rulers who have arrogated to themselves and their close friends honours only fit for patriots. Aside making irrelevant the whole process of awarding honours, it sets a bad precedence for hardworking and earnest Nigerians who now know that being diligent and steadfast would most likely not get them recognised in the country.

If the government was living up to its responsibilities and provided basic amenities, I really do not care much if Queen Nefertiti was awarded the GCFR like Colonel Gaddafi; after all of what use is flattery to pigs?
