President Goodluck Jonathan has urged leaders of the Commonwealth to build on the organisation’s established values and principles in order to achieve economic and social progress in their countries.
He gave the advice on Friday in Perth, Western Australia, while proposing a toast to the Commonwealth at a banquet given by Queen Elizabeth II for heads of state and governments participating in the ongoing Commonwealth Summit.
The president said that the values and attributes shared by its member-countries will ensure that the Commonwealth continues to remain relevant in global affairs for the foreseeable future.
According to him, “Our Commonwealth is remarkable not only because of the diversity of its membership, but principally because we are united by a set of shared values. We all aspire to live a life of freedom and dignity and to achieve economic and social progress for our people,” he said.
