And the 27-year-old Avengers star has put a positive spin on the relationship by telling U.S. Cosmopolitan she has no regrets about marrying The Proposal actor.
‘I’m a big believer that when something feels right, you should do it,’ Johansson says of her 2008 wedding.
"It grew out of a romance and love and a desire to have a future with somebody and I was very fortunate that I married somebody who turned out to be the person I thought he would be."
Johansson does admit, however, that marriage to the 35-year-old wasn’t as easy as she thought it would be.
"Relationships are complicated," she says, "and being married is a living, breathing process.
"I think I was not fully aware of the peaks and valleys. I wasn’t prepared to hunker down and do the work."
The couple’s divorce was finalised in July 2011, just two months shy of their third wedding anniversary.
She explains the breakdown of their relationship, saying: "Both of us were extremely busy. We spent so much time apart. It’s very difficult. It’s bad."
But the actress says she has no regrets about getting married. The We Bought a Zoo co-star says: ‘It seemed like a very romantic thing to do, and it was.
