A child rights non-governmental organisation, Stepping Stones Nigeria, has called for greater collaboration between government and NGOs in order to rejuvenate the nation’s education sector.

The NGO’s call came against the backdrop of plea from the Federal Government that all stakeholders including private organisations should join efforts with it to rebuild the nation’s education.

Apparently responding to the plea, the SSN Advocacy Programme Officer, Dr. Emilie Secker, in a statement in Lagos on Thursday, applauded the call and urged organisations and individuals to work with government to rehabilitate education for the sake of children.

"All children have the right to education so that they can grow up to lead happy and successful lives. We are therefore hugely pleased to see that the Federal Government is so keen to work with NGOs and other stakeholders to improve education in Nigeria. We wish to pledge our full support to the ministry and are keen to develop ways in which we can join forces to share resources and expertise, particularly on literacy levels, teacher training and curriculum development."

The group’s Literacy Programme Officer, Lorraine Questel, also applauded the government on efforts being made to tackle illiteracy in the country.

"It is also very encouraging to see the Federal Government taking such a positive stance on literacy in Nigeria and recognising the importance of raising literacy levels for the future of the country. We completely agree with the Minister of State’s analysis that literacy is essential for addressing problems of violence, poverty and security.

"We are therefore very proud to be supporting the Read and Write Now project in Akwa Ibom State which is recording great successes in improving teacher training and children’s literacy levels," she said.
