THE National Cotton Association of Nigeria, North East Zone, has urged the federal and state governments to purchase cotton from farmers and merchants

THE National Cotton Association of Nigeria, North East Zone, has urged the federal and state governments to purchase cotton from farmers and merchants in order to facilitate increased production of the commodity.

The National Vice-President of the association, Alhaji Musa Umaru, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe on Thursday.

Umaru noted that the government had sensitised farmers to the need to increase the production of the crop, but said that if the market for the produce did not exist, farmers might abandon cotton cultivation for other lucrative businesses.

He said farmers incurred huge losses in 2010 as the textile industries failed to patronise them.
